This past Tuesday, I had the honor of participating in the Scaling Resilience Hubs panel organized by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES). The conversation underscored an urgent truth: to prepare for future challenges—climate-related or otherwise—our communities must build strong, localized support systems that can withstand and respond to crises.
C2ES introduced the Resilience Hub Toolkit for a Climate-Ready North Front Range, a guide for implementing resilience models across Northern Colorado. As I explored the toolkit, one thing became clear—The Family Center/La Familia already embodies the heart of a resilience hub.
What Is a Resilience Hub?
A resilience hub is more than just a building—it’s a trusted community space that provides essential services every day and expands its support before, during, and after emergencies. These hubs help families navigate crises, whether they stem from climate disasters, public health emergencies, or economic uncertainty.
At The Family Center/La Familia, resilience is at the core of what we do. We provide families with:
✅ Utility assistance through Energy Outreach Colorado
✅ Car seat distribution and safety classes
✅ Teen and parent mindfulness workshops
✅ Food, clothing, diapers, and essential resources
During the pandemic, we transformed into a COVID-19 testing and vaccination site because our community needed it. That’s what resilience looks like—showing up in times of crisis and always being ready to serve.
Uncertain Times Call for Collective Action
While we celebrate our role as a resilience hub, we cannot ignore the current challenges facing our families. Recent executive orders have created fear and uncertainty for many in our community, especially immigrant families. At The Family Center/La Familia, we’ve seen firsthand the ripple effects of these policies, as parents worry about their children’s safety and stability.
For 30 years, we have stood beside Northern Colorado families—ensuring stability, advocating for their rights, and providing early childhood education that strengthens our entire community.
And now, we need you to stand with us.
Together, We Show Up for Families
A recent case reminded us why our work is so critical. Late last year, we supported a family facing one of the hardest moments imaginable—a father diagnosed with terminal cancer. Knowing his time with his children was limited, he sought stability for them.
Because of your support, we were able to step in.
✨ His children received food, toys, and winter clothing.
✨ We provided rent assistance to keep the family housed.
✨ We connected them to mental health resources to help them process their grief.
Sadly, he passed away a few weeks ago. But thanks to this community, his children are not alone.
Moments like this remind us of the power of community resilience. They also highlight the urgency of ensuring that The Family Center/La Familia can continue being a lifeline for families when they need it most.
